Busy
Family, Busy Kitchen
This new house utilizes great expanses of windows, a very
large open space for kitchen and breakfast area, as well as
an adjoining family room that opens into the kitchen.
A
dual-level island mimics the window walls, while a second
island with a loweredbaking area helps shorten steps from
oven and prep areas and keeps the traffic flow away from the
main prep and cooking areas. Columns atop the larger island
identify the "kitchen space" while also hiding ceiling
supports. Without the benefit of wall cabinets, storage of
dishes glassware and other kitchenware is accommodated in
base cabinets with roll-outs near the dishwasher. A microwave
is located under the upper level of the larger island, which
is convenient to the refrigerator.
The mudroom entrance leads straight to a desk area, complete
with a computer and storage for the three children of this
very active family. The location of this work station close
to the kitchen allows interaction during meal preparation
and nightly homework.
The
natural red birch cabinets are a perfect fit for this light
and airy space, while the blue-stained baking island provides
a nice contrast and supports the family's favorite color theme
blue. The red birch cloud with hanging blue glass lamp shades
balances the soffited, painted area above the larger columned
island. The wood hood housing the extraction system with remote
blowers above the gas cook top is decorated with a wood carved
basket of flowers also a favorite.
